Jericoacoara is a beach that is approximately 300 km from the capital, Fortaleza. By the year 1985, the place was just an isolated fishing village, hidden amongst huge sand dunes and mobile. So then tourism has been discovered.
Jericoacoara has splendid scenery. Nailed between huge sand dunes and the sea is one of the few places in Brazil where you can watch the sun rise and set in the ocean, due to its peninsular location.
The dune closest to the village is occupied by tourists ritually to watch the sunset, sun, due to its high altitude and privileged position facing the sea. Around the village enormous dunes come and go with the constant action of wind, popularize sandboarding in the region.
Jericoacoara has beautiful beaches, and calm seas, open sea and big waves (almost conducive to surfing) and rocky beaches. The Windsurf and Kitesurf are great appeal in these beaches whose length is greater calm and strong wind.
By having been declared an Environmental Protection Area (APA) and, since 2002, turned into PARNA (National Park), the construction of highways and roads – as well as any type of flooring – is prohibited in Jericoacoara. Access to the village is bordered by dunes and usually done by a suitable vehicle. The tour companies that make transport to the city using one common bus from Fortaleza to Jijoca where the nearest road ends, and then a Jardineira, large vehicle with four-wheel drive.
In 1987, Jericoacoara was considered one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world by The Washington Post.
In 1998, electricity began to be supplied by an underground network, replacing the generators that lit up a few points of the village.
The Pedra Furada, one of the biggest attractions of the village of Jericoacoara, is a rock about five feet tall with a large hole carved by the action of nature. In July, you can watch the sun setting “in” knothole.
The Lagoa Azul and Paraiso, both formed by the rains of the few rainy months, are stunning beaches that you can not miss. With clear waters and white sand.
